Changes - Processing

Link
http://wiki.processing.org/w/Changes
All the great things from Android have now been back-ported to the desktop version of Processing, so we have a super fast OpenGL library. choose between "Standard", "Android", and "JavaScript" mode. Those are the current modes that are being included, though we may add/remove modes as we head to 2.0 (a Jython mode is lurking about, for instance. Mmmm! Tempting.) Like Tools and Libraries, it will be possible for other parties to write their own modes that work inside the PDE.

She is, no doubt, amongst the most eminent representatives of the Hacking movement. To me, it’s extremely impressive though how one of the leaders of this revolution is coming right from outside the technological world and actually has a communication sciences and film college background.

“Underfunded schools are starving in the midst of plenty,” Robert explains. “Discarded computers are our nation’s most wasted educational resource.” in 2007, Robert acquired 18 donated computers. But these computers were less help than he’d anticipated. The operating systems were slow. Some computers had viruses or malware.

Open source won - O'Reilly Radar

Link
http://radar.oreilly.com/2012/07/open-source-won.html
open source is not just for hackers and startups. A new class of innovative, widely adopted technologies has emerged from the open source culture of collaboration and sharing — turning the old model of replicating proprietary software as open source projects on its head. Think Git, D3, Storm, Node.js, Rails, Mongo, Mesos or Spark. We see more enterprise and government folks intermingling with the stalwart open source crowd who have been attending OSCON for years.

/drupalgive initiative | drupal.org

Link
http://drupal.org/drupalgive
A /drupalgive page highlights the great work that your organization is doing for the Drupal project. Not only does your organization receive credit for the work you do, but we also nudge other organizations to give back as well. I expect that employees and potential hires from non-contributing organizations will start demanding to give back. This initiative gives those folks something to point to when advocating and educating inside their organization.

The top 10 open source web fonts | Feature | .net magazine

Link
http://www.netmagazine.com/features/top-10-open-source-web-fonts
finding fonts that were allowed to be used online was difficult to say the least, but the mere utterance of the word "open source" was nearly a felony to type designers everywhere. Today we have individuals standing up, creative typographers conquering new ground, foundries dedicated to the movement, and not only acceptance, but widespread usage from big-name companies to amateurs just messing around. I'm here to give you a tour of not only the best open source fonts available, but how you can get started contributing, and what my vision is for where it's going.

GNU Octave

Link
http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/
a high-level interpreted language, primarily intended for numerical computations. It provides capabilities for the numerical solution of linear and nonlinear problems, and for performing other numerical experiments. It also provides extensive graphics capabilities for data visualization and manipulation. Octave is normally used through its interactive command line interface, but it can also be used to write non-interactive programs. The Octave language is quite similar to Matlab so that most programs are easily portable.

Simon Gardner's answer to History: What is the greatest achievement of Western civilization? - Quora

Link
http://www.quora.com/History/What-is-the-greatest-achievement-of-Western-civili…
I think open source software is the current pinnacle of human achievement. Millions of man hours of remote, global collaboration and development to create an enterprise scale software stack containing implementations of all significant (and not so significant) application types and it's free for anyone in the world to use and learn from. Amazing technological breakthroughs are being made all the time and very, very many of them (The Internet for example) have been made possible through the availability of free, high quality software.
