The good news is that we were all born to be creative. The bad news is that our education system (and in particular, our training to become engineers) drives it out of us. Here’s a startling fact: We lose nearly all of our creativity between the time we are about 5 years old and the time we graduate from high school.

From one perspective, creativity is the ability or act of making something new. It's the quality that lets us go beyond our current designs, concepts, and perceptions and emerge with something completely new. It's the quality that lets artists start with a blank canvas and create masterful images. It lets writers start with a blank page or computer screen and create new stories. It lets sculptors start with a block of stone and create meaningful shapes. And it lets engineers start with a need and define products or processes that meet that need.

As important as cyclist safety is, this month's Collide*scope tackled an even more intractable issue: homelessness. Orlando's population lacking permanent housing varies depending on who's counting. According to statistics shared during the presentation, the Department of Housing and Urban Development calculates 2,800 people go homeless in Orange County nightly; using the Department of Education's metrics, that number jumps to 6,000. Either way, it's a staggering figure that grows each year, making the Orange County Jail by default our largest homeless shelter and mental facility.

Millions of man hours of remote, global collaboration and development to create an enterprise scale software stack containing implementations of all significant (and not so significant) application types and it's free for anyone in the world to use and learn from.

Amazing technological breakthroughs are being made all the time and very, very many of them (The Internet for example) have been made possible through the availability of free, high quality software.

The idea-notebook originates from the English Enlightenment-era tradition to keep a so-called commonplace book. Intellectuals in the 17th and 18th century would assemble their own personalized encyclopedia of quotations by filling their books with interesting passages from their readings. They created their own memory-bank of knowledge, and even thought up indexing systems for these. Darwin’s Grandfather Erasmus Darwin – a physician, philosopher and inventor – kept one of the most famous commonplace books from that time and certainly did his part in inspiring his grandson.
