“vertical aqua gardens,” and they were donated to the shelter by local businesswoman Barrie Freeman and her new venture, Hi-Rise Harvest. The idea is to use these curious structures to educate the facility's residents, many of whom have little experience with fresh produce, much less gardening, on the value of better diets and modern techniques for growing. The seven units, each of which can produce hundreds of pounds of veggies in a typical season while taking up only a couple of square feet of space, were installed in March.

I checked out Ryan Price who spoke to me about Open Innovation. Netflix offered a one million dollar prize to anyone who could improve the types of movie suggestions offered by 10%. Coders from around the world collaborated to solve the problem. In the end Netflix got more than it bargained for. The results were raised by more than 10%. Ryan is helping organize a Drupal Camp where participants hack for a cause. Hack is another way of saying modifying code. Not all hacking is evil.
At BarCamp in September there was a food drive, and I think for what it was the project was considered a success. I like the idea, and I would gladly give food to local needy families.
Another way our event could have an impact on the world is by participating in the One Laptop Per Child Project. $200 is a lot of money for one geek to give on her own, but if a group of 200-500 geeks donated $10+ each, we could buy 10 to 25 laptops.
