Digital Video, the makers of the 2D animation software Toonz, and Japanese publisher DWANGO have announced that as of March 26 Toonz will be made open source under the name OpenToonz.
Studio Ghibli has been using Toonz for animated features since 1995 when it needed to seamlessly combine digitally painted and hand-drawn animation for Princess Mononoke. OpenToonz will use the Toonz Studio Ghibli Version and include features developed for the studio over the course of their many years using the software.

The trick is to use the rem unit introduced in CSS3, which refers to the root element size. In mPDF, 1rem is equivalent to the font size of the HTML body element. All other elements which appear as blocks in the columns, such as headings, subheadings, and info boxes, need to have a vertical size which adds up to an exact multiple of the body text or its line-height. Using rem makes the calculation easier, and also means that changes to body text size will scale other elements proportionally.

Standards like the LAMP Stack, GitHub and Stack Overflow did such a good job of popularizing open source that they practically made it obsolete. Just like “mobile phones” are simply becoming “phones”, “open source software” is simply becoming “software”. This is an incredible win for open source. But it comes with new challenges: how to actually manage demand and workflows, how to encourage contributions, and how to build antifragile ecosystems. We may not feel the burden yet, but winter is coming. In a post open source world, these are problems we’ll all have to contend with.
