Operation Ajax

Link
http://www.cognitocomics.com/operationajax/
the true life spy thriller, CIA: Operation Ajax. As the value of oil explodes in world markets, global power brokers begin to take interest in the ruling political regimes of the Middle East. In Iran, British agents have controlled oil exports for a generation. The shah is holding on to a shaky peace as a new charismatic leader enters the scene. Secret deals, underground rumors of revolt, and dark plots of government overthrow are employed by American, British, and Persian agents. Iran’s oil would flow, by any means necessary. Every actor has a stake in the game. No one can be trusted.

Interactive media are highly complex and at high risk for loss as technologies rapidly become obsolete.  The Preserving Virtual Worlds project will explore methods for preserving digital games and interactive fiction.  Major activities will include developing basic standards for metadata and content representation and conducting a series of archiving case studies for early video games, electronic literature and Second Life, an interactive multiplayer game.

UAV Drones

Link
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unmanned_aerial_vehicle#section_1
The birth of U.S. UAVs (called RPVs at the time) began in 1959 when United States Air Force (USAF) officers, concerned about losing pilots over hostile territory, began planning for the use of unmanned flights.[5] This plan became intensified when Francis Gary Powers and his "secret" U-2 were shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960. Within days, the highly classified UAV program was launched under the code name of "Red Wagon".[6] The August 2 and August 4, 1964, clash in the Tonkin Gulf between naval units of the U.S.

Output Arts » I have a message for you...

Link
http://www.outputarts.com/projects/message-for-you
Listening without speaking alludes to eavesdropping and the covert monitoring of communications. The audience can influence the clarity of the message by adjusting the controls on the machine, giving a physical side to the sense of searching and trying to hang on to the messages. However, the piece includes the deliberate design of interfering with the descrambling process to cause the gradual degradation of the audio so that the messages eventually become engulfed in machine noise before cutting off suddenly to silence.

AWK-ward Ruby

Link
http://tomayko.com/writings/awkward-ruby
this style of programming was very common in UNIX's hayday. Instead of programs being dominated by a single language like Perl or Ruby, you'd build pipelines that combined standard utilities (like sort shown above), sprinkle in bits and pieces of AWK as needed, and drop down to C when performance was critical.

its latest film, The Highwaymen, which details the true story of a group of self-taught African American artists in the 1950s who were able to find fame despite a very racially divided South. In 2004, 26 of the artists were inducted into the Florida Artist’s Hall of Fame by then-Secretary of State Glenda Hood. All told, The Highwaymen created a body of work that included more than 200,000 paintings.

The invention of the heterosexual - LGBT - Salon.com

Link

for much of human history, marriage had absolutely nothing to do with sexuality or sex. It’s more that marriage didn’t have a lot to do with desire. Marriage has always had to do with sex, and the ability to have marital sex and preferably procreate has always been central to marriage. But what was not so important was whether or not you necessarily wanted to have sex with that person.
